Curly/Wavy Hair Tips

I promised ya’ll I was going to write this post, so here it is:
My tips and tricks on how I wear my hair naturally curly!

I don’t wear my hair like this a lot of the time, partially for personal preferences and my hair is also easily prone to frizz, but lately I’ve found a little trick (thanks to TikTok….and yes, that’s slightly embarrassing) and added my own twist to it and I really think it helps the outcome for curly hair! I even attempted this on my sister, who has 95% straight hair (with a slight wave/texture to it) and it worked on her too! There’s plenty of pictures to explain the process and of course product recommendations below, so if you have wavy or curly hair…keep reading!

Product/Prep Work

You’ll want to start with very wet hair. Like slightly towel-dried hair…and when I say towel-dry, I mean microfiber towel or tee-shirt towel, because that’s what is best for your hair and especially curly hair!

First, rake through a leave-in conditioner product using your fingers. You can then use a wide-tooth comb to further comb this through. This is the last time you’ll be combing your hair, so establish your part too.

Then, if you need to use a mousse or wave-enhancing product use that next. Use a scrunching motion to apply this into your hair. You want your hair to start taking it’s natural shape and form.

Lastly, apply a gel product. Hair gel can be as cheap as you want (I’ve linked my fave above that I’ve used for years). I realize not all curly girls love hair gel, and that’s okay! I got a little heavy-handed on this application, but you can use as little or as much as you want. The gel will help form that curl pattern and hold it. You’ll scrunch the gel into your hair – do not rake through! I scrunch all over, not just at my ends, and get in there with both hands!

Blow Drying

Now this next step is crucial and where my usual curly-girl routine changed – you’re going to hold your blow dryer and diffuser away from your head. I used to start drying and immediately work that diffuser into my hair, but by holding it at a distance you “set” your gel and other products first before really agitating the hair.

Once the gel feels “set” or a little firm in your hair, then you can resume your normal diffuser routine, scrunching and letting that diffuser do the work for you until your hair is dry to your liking! Voila!

Here’s how my sister’s hair turned out below, and I think a wave-enhancing product would have helped even more! (I just didn’t have one with me….)

So this technique helps for even just the slightest amount of wave to your hair! If you try it out, let me know your thoughts below! With summer heat and humidity upon us, I find I usually let my hair be natural the most during the summer months for ease, not to mention….it’s a time saver! I know every curly girl has a method she found that works best for her hair, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well this worked….so give it a try and let’s let those natural curls and waves shine sisters!
