Smooth, Straight & Volumized

Just because you’re having a straight hair day….doesn’t mean it has to be a FLAT hair day!

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair when it’s straight. I love having it be smooth and straight, but I also love having voluminous hair, which doesn’t always happen after busting out the flat iron. So I’ve been working the last couple weeks to nail down some excellent products to help boost up straightened hair, or would also work great if you have fine or flat hair! I’ve also been testing a new hair tool I’m sure you have seen around being shared by many other women, but I wanted to put it to the Product Junkie test! I’ll share my thoughts below! Here are the products and tools I’ll be discussing!

Hair Products

Firstly, to help my hair before blowing it out, I started using this priming product from IGK. It helps to smooth out the hair, fight humidity and frizz, and also serve as a heat protectant. After using this and my usual blow-dry potion, I’m now ready for blow drying! (See next section for new blow dryer) After I’m done blow drying and any straightening, I move on to a root spray. I’ve used the Living Proof Dry Volume Blast in the past and I love its grit and texture, so similarly I’ve also been testing a new product from R&Co. The Zig Zag texture spray is used as a root teasing spray or a mid-shaft texture spray. It’s got a subtle hint of universal color, so no powdery white-ness like dry shampoo or other volume sprays, and you literally just spray it at your roots and fluff it up for instant root fullness. Not to mention, you get the pleasure of wearing the R&Co. perfectly-crafted scent that accompanies all of their hair products.

Lastly, I’ve been testing out two (new to me) products from OGX. First is the multi-benefit hairspray, which is great for straight and smooth hair. It’s a multi-tasking spray, and I would describe it as a medium-hold hairspray that’s still easily brushable, but also helps to preserve hairstyles. It also fights humidity and adds shine to finished styles. The second product is the OGX Moroccan Dry Shampoo. I bought this on a whim to replace my empty Batiste can, and I’m so glad that I did! It’s a high-powered dry shampoo that doesn’t leave a super-powdery residue, and definitely helps to give your roots a boost. The combination of these two products definitely helps give your hair a boost! Both of these OGX products also have an amazing scent as well.

Revlon Multi-Styler

I held out for a long time on trying this product out because I had heard mostly good, but also some mixed reviews on it. But – I have now tested it out multiple times and I have a definite list of pros and cons for the beloved Revlon One-Step Hairdryer!

PROS:

  • Combines a round brush and a hair dryer in one
  • Much easier to use than the above – especially if you’re a round brushing novice
  • Gets very hot, but has multiple settings for cool, low and hot
  • Definitely gave a sleeker blowout with curled, volumized ends
  • Would work beautifully for any length of hair, but especially medium length and short
  • Extremely versatile and helpful for quick blowouts + hair refreshing after the gym, etc.

CONS:

  • Does get very hot – so make sure you are using a product with heat protectant in it
  • If you have curly hair, it doesn’t get quite close enough to the scalp for me to smooth out kinks and curls (but a flat iron will fix them)
  • Had a few tangles – could be from longer hair or thick hair problems

Overall, I will be keeping this hair dryer because it was much easier to manage one tool, rather than working a round brush and blow dryer every time I blow dry my hair. I use my traditional blow dryer to get my hair about 80% dry, then section my hair and go in with the Revlon dryer. It’s also on sale lately on Amazon, bringing it under $50 which is more affordable than other models of the same concept. The pictures above are from my blow-out with this tool and minimal flat ironing. I love a curled end, but if you wanted stick- straight hair, these tips and products would also work well for that!

Hopefully some of these products and tools will help you achieve a fuller look for your straight hair!
